Comparison websites aren't keeping us satisfied - Which? News

  1. Almost every single financial publication available to consumers offers ‘Best Buy’ mortgage tables produced from a variety of sources, including other mortgage brokers. What I would like to know is, who’s buying the ‘Best Buy’ mortgage? We can guarantee that, for the vast majority of consumers, the products detailed in the ‘Best Buys’ are wholly irrelevant and they will have little chance of securing these headline grabbing rates because of the products’ criteria. In my opinion the ‘Best Buys’ do more harm than good in that they provide the consumer with unrealistic expectations of the mortgage they will be able to secure.

A further issue for consumers using the comparison sites is their inability to provide a continuous online mortgage advice service. Instead, users are only offered telephone or face-to-face advice options which may not be their favoured method of conducting business. Consumers who wish to have the best of both worlds, and want to stay online, can use Email Mortgages’ service which provides mortgage advice via email rather than a telephone or face-to-face interview. In this way, consumers are not just reliant on constant comparison site searches, instead they will receive quality advice and the best recommendations available via the technology we all know and use every day.
